Chinh the bear takes first steps in his new sanctuary

Chinh, the sweet Asiatic black bear whose freedom you helped negotiate, has finally transitioned to the outdoor enclosure of the FOUR PAWS Ninh Binh sanctuary. Watch him feel grass under his paws for the first time and splash about in his pool, in this beautiful bear sanctuary.

Chinh’s first week was filled with plenty of special moments. After a month in bear quarantine, which is essential to ensure his health and protect other resident bears from any potential disease transfer, this sweet bear is now slowly but surely adjusting to his new life.

FOUR PAWS’ expert caretakers are making sure to provide Chinh the Asiatic black bear with all the love, care and attention he needs to make him comfortable. His peaceful new home is a far cry from the confines of the tiny metal cage where he spent two decades.

Thanks to animal lovers like you, Chinh’s heartbreaking story of a life in captivity was turned into a heartwarming one. Seeing him roam freely, enjoy warm sunlight and cool off in the pool is a strong reminder of what could be possible for so many bears who are currently held captive on bear farms across Vietnam.

For almost 20 years, World Animal Protection, alongside other NGOs have worked with the Vietnamese government to end the cruel practice of bear bile farming, and to protect the small population of bears remaining in the wild.

Thanks to your ongoing support of our collaborative efforts, there are now more bears in sanctuaries run by NGOs and government rescue centres than on farms in the country.

Together, we can give more bears like Chinh a life truly worth living.
